She understood emergencies from the responder’s side. She knew that a family might remember every word spoken during a crisis, even when the person delivering those words had already moved on to the next call.

Then Busse became the family member waiting for answers.

Years before her son’s death, her husband was killed in a motorcycle accident. Busse struggled with alcohol after losing him. She entered sober recovery a few years later and has remained sober for many years. Her son was murdered and husband killed in an accident.

In February 2022, she faced another loss. Her son, Rylee James, had been murdered.

In February 2022, a burned vehicle was discovered near Leavenworth, Kansas. Human remains were found inside its trunk. At first, Busse received inquiries from law enforcement about a car. The questions were vague, but she feared something was terribly wrong. Rylee was missing, and the passage of time brought no reassuring explanation.

Then came a request for dental records.

For thirteen days after her last contact with Rylee, Busse waited for official confirmation. She had years of experience around emergencies, investigations, and people in crisis. The eventual confirmation gave the remains a name. It also made the loss irrevocably real: Rylee James was dead.

The investigation into Rylee’s murder became tied to one of Kansas’s early state-level RICO prosecutions. The case expanded beyond a single killing into allegations involving a broader criminal enterprise.

According to Busse’s account, two people charged in connection with Rylee’s killing accepted plea deals. Another was acquitted. After her husband was killed in a motorcycle accident, she turned to alcohol. She later entered sober recovery and has maintained her sobriety for many years.
