Constable Laurie White heard a loud pop. Then came the smell of gunpowder, smoke rising from her shin, and the realization that a routine moment in police work had become a fight for her life. “I tasted the chalky residue. I smelled the smell of gunpowder. I looked down and I saw grayish smoke coming from my shin,” White recalls. “And then I saw a black hole in the white door. And I said to my partner, ‘I’ve been shot.’” Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin.

Moments later, her partner called out the emergency radio code that would eventually become the title of her book: “10-33.”

Officer down.

In this special episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, White shares what followed: a lifesaving amputation, months of rehabilitation, and her determined return to full duty after an amputation. She also speaks about the psychological injuries that continued long after she put her uniform back on.

A November Afternoon That Changed Her Life

In November 1998, White and two fellow Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers were executing a search warrant at the home of a sexual offender. The interview is also featured across Facebook and Instagram.

Standing to one side of a carport door as officers attempted to gain access, she was shot in the right leg.

Her partner dragged her to safety. A medical evacuation plane transported her to Vancouver, where she underwent eight hours of surgery. Police Officer Shot by a Criminal: Her Remarkable Return to Full Duty After an Amputation.

When White awoke, she learned that surgeons had amputated her right leg five inches below the knee to save her life.

“For a long time, I did not look at it,” she says. “I felt that looking at it would make it real.”

For the police officer shot by a criminal, surviving was only the beginning.

Learning to Walk While Living With Trauma

After weeks in the hospital, White began intensive rehabilitation. Healing brought complications, infections, and pain, along with the challenge of learning to walk with a prosthetic leg. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles.

“The wound healing was extremely challenging. Infections were problematic,” she explains. “So, there were many hurdles to overcome at the beginning.”

The emotional toll was equally profound. White describes overwhelming grief, anger, and a period when she struggled with suicidal thoughts.

Her account gives listeners a candid view of catastrophic injury: the physical recovery, the loss of familiar abilities, and the effort required to imagine a future when everything has changed.

Returning to work became a goal. Reaching it required far more than determination alone.

Her Return to Full Duty After an Amputation

White had to demonstrate that she could meet the demands of operational policing.

That meant passing the RCMP’s Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation, known as the PARE, and completing driving, firearms, and use-of-force assessments. Psychological readiness was another essential part of the process. “Honestly, it was a 24-7 job for me,” she says. “I was going to physio for hours, working out at the gym, and practicing walking every chance I got.”

Firearms requalification carried particular significance.

“I needed to make sure that I could be ok with the sound of guns,” White explains.

Ten months after the shooting, she returned to full, unrestricted general duties. She became the first RCMP amputee to do so with a prosthetic leg. Police Officer Shot by a Criminal: Her Remarkable Return to Full Duty After an Amputation.

It was a remarkable achievement. It also marked another stage in a recovery that remained complex.

Returning to Work Did Not End the Struggle

White describes supportive colleagues at her detachment in Kitimat. Over the following years, however, she also encountered difficulties obtaining accommodations and navigating disability benefits.

Living with a permanent physical disability and post-traumatic stress disorder brought challenges that a successful fitness test could not resolve.

Her story explores those lasting effects, along with her experiences as a first responder and single parent. She has spent years speaking about gaps in support for injured officers. The interview is also featured across Facebook and Instagram.

Her return to duty deserves recognition. So does her willingness to discuss the grief, trauma, and continuing needs behind that accomplishment.

The Story Behind Her Book

White’s experiences led to her book, “10-33: An Officer Down Steps Back Up.”

Its title carries the emergency call she heard after being shot, and the rebuilding that followed.

Through her book and this Podcast conversation, the retired Canadian police officer shares a deeply personal account of injury, perseverance, and life after trauma.
