Samuel Griffin III had built a career around keeping other people safe. Before running his own security company, he worked in executive protection for presidential candidates, heads of state and high-profile entertainers. That work demanded vigilance, discipline and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
The cancer diagnosis brought uncertainty into his own home. Griffin had to make decisions about his care while coming to terms with the possibility that he might die. He was thinking about his future as a husband and father at the same time he was trying to absorb what the diagnosis meant for him.
His daughter’s age is one of the most striking details in the interview. She was only 5. For Griffin, the possibility of dying young also meant the possibility of missing years of her life. Those were the stakes when he went back to New York for treatment. Cancer, Stage 4 Diagnosis, His Treatment, The Impact and Recovery. His treatment, its impact and the work of recovery
The move to New York was a turning point in Griffin’s account. He went there for care after learning the cancer had spread. In the interview, he talks about the physical recovery that followed and the effect the experience had on his personal relationships.
Griffin’s family went through its own emotional recovery. His wife and daughter experienced the uncertainty alongside him, and the interview gives that part of the story room. The question of whether he would survive had shaped their lives as a family. Hearing Griffin describe what came afterward helps explain why the story continues beyond the news that he was cancer-free.
There are two different moments in his account. In the first, a 47-year-old father is preparing for the possibility of death. In the second, that same father is looking back on what he and his family lived through. The distance between those moments is where much of the conversation takes place.
How faith shapes the way Sam Griffin lives and works
Griffin describes faith as a driving force in his life. His approach pairs prayer with the work he believes he needs to do:
“Pray about it. Work on it. Believe in it. Put action behind your faith.”
That last sentence captures how Griffin talks about faith and responsibility. His story includes the decision to return to New York for medical care, the effort of physical recovery, and the emotional adjustments that followed for him and his family. Faith also carries into his work as a writer and podcast host. On his own podcast, Protected and Purposeful, Griffin brings together faith and leadership. His appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show gives listeners the chance to hear him talk about those subjects through the experience of being a patient, husband and father.
The security career behind the story
Griffin founded Leumas Security Services in Virginia in 1996. Over a 30-year career in security, his work has ranged from executive protection to managing local teams of security guards.
His experience protecting people in the public eye taught him what vigilance requires in practice. His work managing guards brings him closer to a different question: how does someone entering private security learn to take responsibility for the people and places they’re assigned to protect?
Griffin writes through Leumas Publishing and co-authored Rent-A-Cop Reboot with Theresa M. Caldwell. The book is aimed at people considering private security as a career. It starts with practical questions, including:
“What is security work really like?”
“If I want to be a security professional, does that mean becoming a police officer?”
The book explores what the job asks of people, what newcomers should consider before entering the field, and how private security professionals serve in roles distinct from law enforcement. It is written as a quick read for someone weighing a first security job or deciding whether to make a career of it.
What a stage 4 colorectal cancer diagnosis means
Stage 4 colorectal cancer means the disease has spread from the colon or rectum to distant parts of the body. The liver and lungs are among the possible sites of spread. The location and extent of the cancer, along with characteristics of the tumor, help guide treatment decisions. Cancer, Stage 4 Diagnosis, His Treatment, The Impact and Recovery. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms.
The National Cancer Institute describes several approaches for advanced colon cancer. Chemotherapy and targeted drugs may be used, immunotherapy is an option for certain tumors, and surgery can be considered in selected cases. Griffin’s interview focuses on the personal impact of treatment and recovery. His account does not specify which treatments he received.
When colorectal cancer screening begins
The CDC recommends that most adults begin regular colorectal cancer screening at age 45. Screening can detect precancerous polyps that can be removed, and it can find cancer earlier, when treatment often works best. Options include stool-based tests such as FIT and exams such as colonoscopy.
A personal or family history of colorectal cancer or certain polyps, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, and inherited conditions such as Lynch syndrome can raise risk. People with these risk factors can talk with a healthcare professional about when to begin screening and which test fits their situation.
