In another case, he watched as a child, removed from a dangerous home, arrived at the hospital filthy, lice-ridden, and wearing clothes so destroyed they had to be incinerated. “Handing that child a teddy bear and clean clothes wasn’t just about comfort,” he explains. “It was the first step in telling them, ‘You matter. You’re safe now.’”

The Cleveland Clinic calls these “Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs),” which can cause lifelong damage to mental and physical health.
