Officer and Founder Sector K9
Good afternoon,Please consider a story on or as a source for a story Sector K9 and Founder Wes Keeling. Wes is the founder and driving force behind Sector K9, a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening public safety and addressing the national abandoned dog crisis by using RESCUE detection dogs that harness the unique abilities of highly trained dogs. With a distinguished background in law enforcement(25 years) and an unwavering commitment to public safety, Wes established Sector K9 into a trusted partner to address a critical need: providing police departments, schools, and community organizations with access to professionally trained K9 units, regardless of financial constraints.Sector K9's mission is to provide free, accurate, and reliable training for Police K9s, their handlers, and departments nationwide. Sector K9's Rescue to Resource program rescues elite dogs from shelters across the country, trains them to become narcotics detection and tracking K9s, and provides them at no cost to municipal, county, and school district law-enforcement agencies. This provides agencies with cost-effective solutions while reducing the burden on local budgets. Detection Dogs usually cost between $16,000 to $20,000. Under Wes’s leadership, the organization has donated dozens of fully trained K9s to departments that otherwise could not afford them, directly enhancing safety in neighborhoods and schools nationwide. These donations have empowered local agencies to enhance public safety, improve operational effectiveness, and protect vulnerable communities—often at no cost to taxpayers.Wes’s vision extends beyond canine training: he is passionate about bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community, fostering trust, transparency, and collaboration. His expertise in both police work and nonprofit leadership has made him a sought-after voice on the role of K9s in modern policing, school security, and community engagement.Sector K9's Rescue2Resource Program is the heart of the organization. It is this powerful idea: a shelter dog—abandoned, misunderstood,
overlooked—can become a hero. Through Rescue2Resource Program, Sector K9 identifies high-drive shelter dogs from across the
country—many just days away from euthanasia—and evaluate them not by their breed, but by their genetic drives, work ethic, and desire to connect. Dogs that meet our criteria enter a professional K9 training program to become single-purpose detection K9s—ready to detect narcotics, firearms, or explosives in service of public safety. Once trained, these dogs are donated—fully certified—to law enforcement agencies, with departments only responsible for the cost of the handler training course. This model eliminates
financial barriers while giving these dogs the one thing they’ve always needed: purpose. This isn’t just dog training. It’s transformation. It’s life-saving work on both sides.
